The total cost including design, construction and inspection is approximately $480M.
The funds for the project include monies from federal and state gas taxes, the SC Transportation Infrastructure Bank, and specific funding from the South Carolina General Assembly.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation is the owner of this project and will have full-time staff members overseeing all aspects of construction.
Blythe Construction Company of Charlotte, NC and Zachary Construction of San Antonio, Texas have formed a joint venture (Blythe-Zachry) to build Phase 2 (MM 77-98). Phase 3 (MM 98-106) is being constructed by Lane Construction of Charlotte, NC.
Phase 2 (MM77-98) is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 and Phase 3 (MM98-106) was completed in December 2022.
The project includes:
- rehabilitation of the existing 6 lane concrete portion from approximately mile marker 77 to mile marker 80
- the construction of a new railroad bridge at mile marker 80.5
- the widening to 3 lanes in each direction from mile maker 80 to mile marker 98
The construction of the interstate will accommodate the existing cemetery in the median of I 85 and will not encroach into it. In other words, the cemetery will remain as is.
